An Organization Chart is a diagram showing the structure of an organization, relationships and relative ranks in its part and jobs. It's very useful in understanding the relationships between departments or a group in a company. We support Organization Chart in Visual Paradigm products for business modeling.

Organization Chart is useful for illustrating the organization's structure, showing the hierarchical authority and between departments and jobs.

We are going to explain the notation of the Organization Chart and show you how it can be drawn in VP products. We will use Business Process Visual ARCHITECT (BP-VA) as an example.

Drawing Organization Chart

  1. A new Organization Chart can be created by:

    • Main Menu

      Select File > New Diagram > Business Process Modeling > Organization Chart in the Main Menu.

    • Toolbar

      Click New Organization Chart on the toolbar.

    • Diagram Navigator

      Under Business Process Modeling, right-click on Organization Chart and select New Organization Chart in the popup menu.

  2. When a new Organization Chart is created, there will be an automatically created Unit shape. Enter the name of the Organization Unit.

  3. When you move the mouse cursor over the shape, there will show the resource icon(s) besides the shape, which are for creating shapes in a handy way.

  4. Press on the resource icon New Subordinate and drag to a desired position.

  5. A new subordinate is created and Link between them is created at the same time. Enter the name of the Unit.

  6. Starting from the second layer of the chart, there are resource icons for creating linear coworkers.

  7. Click the resource icon New Coworker to create Unit shape in the same rank.

  8. The coworker is created in the same level of the source unit, enter the name of the coworker.


Customizing Layout for Organization Chart

Keep modeling the Organization Chart without care of tidiness of the diagram may lead to messy Unit shapes across the diagram. You can perform layout in order to rearrange the units in the diagram.

  1. Right-click on the messy diagram and select Layout > Customized... in the popup menu.

  2. In the Layout dialog box, click appropriate layout style tab. We will select Hierarchical as layout style.

  3. It's possible to configure the layout details in terms of distance, orientation, etc. Let's set the Min. Layout Distance as 20. Click OK to confirm settings and proceed layout in the diagram.

  4. After performing layout, you can get a tidier diagram.


Changing Format of Unit Shapes

It is a good idea to distinguish groups in an organization by the format of the Unit shapes. For example, use different color for every groups:

  1. On the Organization Chart, select the Unit shapes to be changed in format. We are going to select the units in the same layer.

  2. You can change the fill color of the unit shapes by:

    • Property Pane

      In the Fill field, click the "..." button.

    • Popup Menu

      Right-click on one of the selected shapes and select Format > Fill... in the popup menu.

  3. Then in the Format Fill Color dialog box, select the color you want and click OK to confirm.

  4. The fill color of the selected Unit shapes are changed.
